In a bold move Virgin Media secured planning permission from Dublin City Council to erect a fiber optic antenna on top of the Spire in O'Connell Street Dublin. It will be 2400 ft tall on top of the 398ft Spire, making it the tallest man made structure in the world.
Virgin said that the antenna in Dublin City will bring its 360 Broadband service to every part of Ireland, all of Europe and most of the west coast of the USA. It will also allow broadband to be picked up on mobile smart phones and hand held devices while flying on Virgin Airways throughout the world. They also hope to provide the service free for Ryanair & Aer Lingus flights but only if they put a Sir Richard Branson image just inside the door as you enter the Boeing 737 planes. It's believed that Michael O'Leary was not happy with this proposal but conceded because it made good commercial sense. Ryanair will be charging €20 for anybody carrying smart phones on to their respective flights.
Branson who still has a love for his 'hot air' hobby, tested the potential for the technology while flying secretly in his high altitude balloon 'Virgin Atlantic Flyer' at night time from Dublin Mountains near the Hellfire Club to Dalkey Island this day last year.
