About Us

The Football Association of Ireland is the governing body of football in Ireland. Our game is being developed and supported by the FAI and its associates; clubs, affiliates and leagues, in every townland, city street and community across Ireland, in line with our mission to foster, develop and promote football.

Our goal is to continue to increase participation in all sections of the community through our members, voluntary and executive, working with the many stakeholders who enjoy and support our sport.

History

Football in Ireland has a rich history dating back to the 19th Century. First introduced to the island of Ireland in the 1860s, football has grown to become the most popular sport in the country, with over 450,000 people regularly involved in the game.

From the introduction of the sport to Ireland in the 1860s, through to the foundation of the FAI in the 1920s, and the success enjoyed by our international teams in the years since.

Aviva Stadium

The Football Association of Ireland, along with our partners in the IRFU, are joint owners of the Aviva Stadium. Aviva Stadium opened its doors on 14th May 2010 and has a seated capacity of 50,000. It hosts all senior Republic of Ireland football matches. For information see www.fai.ie
